Potato Hole, on which Booker is backed by the blistering Drive-By Truckers, was Booker T.'s first new album in nearly two decades, and the lead single "Warped Sister" was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental. Tab Benoit - Sunday, August 8, 5:30 p.m.
Listen to Tab Benoit here.
Capping off the weekend is Creole bluesman Tab Benoit on Sunday, August 8. A Cajun man, born on November 17, 1967, Tab grew up in Houma, Louisiana. A guitar player since his teenage years, he hung out at the Blues Box, a ramshackle music club and cultural center in nearby Baton Rouge run by guitarist Tabby Thomas. Playing guitar alongside Thomas, Raful Neal, Henry Gray and other high-profile regulars at the club, Benoit learned the blues first-hand from a faculty of living blues legends. The nightly impromptu gigs were enough to inspire Benoit to assemble his own band – a stripped down bass-and-drums unit propelled by his solid guitar skills and leathery, Cajun-spiced vocal attack. He took his show on the road in the early ‘90s and hasn’t stopped since. Benoit has done his best over the years to maintain a commitment to his Cajun roots. An environmental activist as well as a stellar blues musician, Benoit has made the preservation of the endangered delta wetlands his personal crusade. He serves as president of Voice of the Wetlands, an environmental organization he co-founded in 2003, and he appeared prominently in Hurricane on the Bayou, a 2006 documentary by filmmaker McGillivray Freeman that chronicles life in Louisiana after Katrina. Hurricane on the Bayou played in IMAX theaters in the U.S., Canada and Europe throughout 2007. So be sure to catch this high-energy, foot-stompin' good time!
Lunar Fire - Friday, August 6, 8 p.m.
Kicking off the festival on Friday night is Lunar Fire...a dance party with high energy music and amazing visuals. Lunar Fire is booty shaking, earth quaking, tribal gypsy hop. The musicians blaze into the night with multi-lingual spoken word and rap, elements of hip hop and disco, trance guitar, bass funk and massive tribal percussion. The dancers ignite a psychedelic frenzy combining unique innovative dance moves with spectacular props, striking black light effects, projections and fire. Appearances at Dreamtime Festival and Burning Man have earned them an underground following across the western United States, Mexico and Central America. On tour they have shared the bill with acts such as Michael Franti, Les Claypool and members of the String Cheese Incident. Come Friday and experience the inspiring luminsecent dance theater by the artists of the epic rock band Kan'Nal.
